A thunderstorm is passing over at the moment. I sat on the balcony just before it, on purpose. It was quiet and relaxing.

I saw the 13th stage of the Tour de France, and it was good to see Thomas Voeckler coming over the finish line, knowing that he defended his yellow successfully.

Two searches, with the exact same parameters, and the same URL, give different results:
* This is a search for 'blue whale' by a friend in New Zealand.
* This is a search for 'blue whale' by me.
Notice how they're exactly the same? Same URL, both the New Zealand versions of Google, SafeSearch off... and yet, different results. It seems to me that Google are just putting in random pictures of blue whales or something... and if you click that first link again, you'll see that there's even a result from The World of Monkey Island. Weird...

Well, the point is... I've been thinking about emigrating for a while now. And it could be that I found a destination. Well, in any case, it'll be my next holiday destination: Colorado. Now all I need is: a) money; b) information about Colorado; c) leave everything behind I have here. Obviously, 'c)' will be the most difficult to achieve, but of course there is a reason why I picked that particular destination. Guess you'd like to know, huh...?

Well, to come back to my previous post: http://marc.perkel.com/archives/000233.html. That site is about the famous Berg decapitation video, which I'm sure you've either heard of, or maybe even seen. It's easy to find on the Internet, and pretty gruesome if you're easily shocked.
But, about the page. It raises some interesting questions concerning the authenticity of the video. It is really worth a read. Now, I'm not saying that I agree or disagree with what is said there, but it sparks a huge discussion (judging from all the comments) and shows what Bush really sparked when he said he was 'gonna smoke 'em outta their holes'. War is bad. People who go to war are bad. Period.

Let's go back a while. About four years back. George W. Bush was elected president of the United States of America, and Osama bin Laden was dancing on the table. Osama had seen George Bush Senior's war on Iraq and his agressiveness towards the Middle East. Bin Laden was hoping that history would repeat itself. Finally, he could get out his plans, the plans he had been making, for a terrorist attack of which the likes had never been seen before. Under Clinton, he would never be able to get the reaction he wanted, but with Bush Junior, it would be a piece of cake. September 11, 2001. A day we'll never forget - our generation's equivalent of the assasination on President Kennedy. The whole American nation is in shock, and even panicking. George W. Bush sees no option but to resort to violence - he is a simple man. Thus, war in Afghanistan. But what made Osama really happy, is that President Bush decided that he must finish the job his father started. Not only did this shift the attention from Afghanistan to Iraq, but also it gave Bin Laden another reason to be happy. The Americans invaded Iraq, Saddam is captured, everybody happy. Fast forward a couple of months, and the Americans (under the uninspiring leadership of an arrogant president) are still in Iraq. Iraqis are unhappy, and revolting. Americans are unhappy, and are starting to voice their opinions in public. The thin patriottic veil has finally been lifted, and Bush is accomplishing the opposite of what he wanted to. He is helping terrorism a great deal, by achieving that Americans are finally beginning to see what is happening in the Middle East, and by setting the Arabian world aflame. Osama turns out to be a brilliant strategist, like Napoleon, or Gaius Julius Caesar. And, like those two, he is a deeply cruel man, not afraid of killing, and oppressing people to no end. Where this whole situation will go, nobody knows, but a culmination of violence is not unrealistic, and all that Bin Laden had to do was to stir things up a little - and presto, the mixture is still moving violently, nearly three years after the initial stir.

Eff, you, see, kay. I'm pretty much screwed, thanks to Microsnot. Well, almost. I have 1.18 GB space left on my hard disk, and I decide to burn some stuff to CD to clean things up a bit. I'm assuming I need 700 MB free space for this, right? Wrong. First, Windows XP copies the files that need burning to some folder, then it writes them to an image file, on the hard disk. Thus, you need at least twice the disk space of the files to be burnt. During the burning of the CD, I saw the free space drop to under 300 MB, so I decided I'd rather cancel it. Windows is like 'Blah blah, are you sure?', and I'm like 'Yes.' Okay, the thing is cancelled, and lo and behold, I have 867 MB of space left. The couple hundred MB I lost are probably in some temp file somewhere, but I don't know where. The burning-to-CD function in Windows XP is obviously flawed.
I then decide that maybe defragmentation will create just a bit more room on the hard disk. However, the defrag program says there needs to be at least 15% free disk space for it to function properly, and I have 3% (???). So, that means on my 30 GB hard disk, I need 4.5 GB free space for 'defrag' to work! If I had that amount of space, I wouldn't even think about defragmentation! Now, I have two options:
1) To buy an additional hard disk (external, no less, for we're talking about a notebook).
2) To get my network back working again (which would basically mean buying a new router).
Oh, maybe there's another:
3) To wait for Longhorn and hope for the best.

Shocking news about the bomb found on the train in Spain ( link ), but at least half as shocking (okay, maybe a bit less) is this quote from that article: "Authorities have said the investigation of the March 11 bombings has focused on the Moroccan Islamic Combatant Group, which also has been blamed for attacks last year in Casablanca, Morocco, that killed 33 people and 12 suicide bombers." Apparently, the Washington Post considers 'people' and 'suicide bombers' different species. Maybe they're aliens or something? I think that's why NASA is up there now, to prepare a military mission to rid the galaxy of terrorism. Sounds like a good story for Star Wars Episode VII: Rise of the Terrorists.

I have a tendency of having worst-case scenarios. For instance, when I would go grocery shopping, I take into account that there might be an atomic bomb dropped, people panic, the super market gets flung away into space and we're doomed to live on an asteroid... well, at least something like that. Not so extreme of course, but I'm always prepared for someone getting angry or stealing stuff or hitting someone or whatever... maybe that helps me to stay (relatively) calm when situations like these do come up.

I think I know how spammers are trying to evade spamming filters. I got an e-mail with two images, one of how I should visit a certain site that teaches me all about 'raking in the profits' with eBay, and another with an unsubscribe option. The text in between is what makes it interesting though; simple spam filters would probably regard this as a normal story:

This is a problem. My solution is to combine studying with one of my hobbies: blogging. By posting my progress, I press myself to live up to my blog posts. Example: Today, yes, today, I will resume with a speaking exercise, and I'll try to do as many lessons as I possibly can. Then, and only then when I have done so, I can reward myself with playing around with the LOTR Online Trading Card Game again. Yes, it's kinda cool, although trading card games are almost beyond my comprehension. All you have to do is read. 'kay?

And again, I receive a very questionable e-mail message... The maker really tried hard to make it look like an official Microsoft message, and almost succeeded, complete with the blue bar (with 'Microsoft' not in white, but normal letters, visibly a hyperlink) and XP style pictures, which are attached to the message, something a professional company would never get away with. People, Microsoft clearly always say that they do not send security updates through e-mail attachments, so never ever open those attachments, no matter how official the message itself may look. If you are to download an update to a Microsoft product, there are two ways: download it from any page on the Microsoft website only, or use the well-known program Windows Update, that's included in Windows XP. Be careful with where you click, and watch out for psychological games and manipulation.

Okay, so I have just seen The Matrix: Revolutions. First, I will review the film itself. Let's get right to the point: I feel that this film just about ruined the trilogy. #1 was the ultimate geek movie, of course, and #2 wasn't bad - hey, it had lots of Monica Bellucci. But this one... it begins. I almost fell asleep during the first hour or so, it was just dialogue, dialogue, dialogue. Yawn. Boring. But then, suddenly, oh boy, oh boy, here come the machines! I admit, this section was exciting, and especially the 16-year-old guy was funny, but it really felt like your average computer game. Then, the whole Agent Smith duel with the 'self-inflicted wounds' guy. I think they used just a little bit too much strobe-lights in that one. Neo turning blind was an interesting thing though, and his X-ray-like vision came out quite nicely. Mind you, I didn't think the film was horrible, it just isn't very good. The whole scene with Trinity dying is just a load of big fat... I don't know, but it was way over the top. I haven't come to see Titanic, dammit. Then, the real shit happens. Sure, the final duel with Agent Smith was, well, not bad, but really, you'd think they'd run out of ideas by now. The ending was too much a storybook ending for such a philosophical build-up. Now, with that out of the way, I can speak my mind on something I find even more... yes, let's use the word: disturbing. It seems as though not only some names, but significant chunks of the storyline are copied from the bible, and especially the gospel. The way Neo lay there when he died, how he gave his life for the entire human population, and, particularly distasteful, the Architect (or head robot, whatever) saying: "It is done." That took it beyond originality for me. I know that most epic stories since Jesus' life were at least vaguely based on that, but this is too much. Shall I go on? Okay, if you want to take it really deep, the people in Zion had had their Exodus out of the Matrix, where they were slaves of a creation of the Architect. Can anyone say Pharaoh keeping the Israelites as slaves? Am I exaggerating here? Not at all. Agent Smith is... Satan. 'No, how can you say such a thing?!' Not in everything he does, of course, but he has the world in his power. When Neo tried to get up, Smith tried to talk him out of it, tempting him, so to speak. Now read the first part of Matthew 4. It doesn't work, of course, and that's where Smith is being dealt a huge blow. Neo gives his life anyway, but in doing this, wins. Also. The Sentinels dropping when Trinity flew into the sky, reminded me vaguely of falling angels. And the whole Matrix did have an apocalyptic feel to it, in the end. Of course, then there is relief, and, lo and behold, paradise. N'est-ce pas?
Overall, I'm going to buy the DVD set, and I am probably reading too much into the story (or not). You should see the movie and comment on this, in your mind, or in the open. And that this movie sparks so much discussion inside of me, should prove that it is actually a good film, despite its many flaws. Go see it.

Once upon a time, there was a singularity, called B'ng. B'ng was surrounded only by nothingness, and felt quite alone. So, B'ng decided he should have some friends. Because he wouldn't be able to make friends with the nothingness around him, he decided not to make, but to create friends. And so, he became Big B'ng. Sadly, he died in the explosion, disintegrating into plasma. His spirit was carried on in the plasma, however, and quickly the particles (Pions, Quarks, Xeons, and other strange-named dots) made friends with each other. They decided to organise into protons. Protons were very positive communities, and the NewTron communities, shaped shortly thereafter, quickly became allies of the Protons, eventually becoming very tight living communities, known as Cores. There were some outsiders though, who didn't really fit in: the Eel-Actrons. Because of their eel-like characters, no one really liked them, and they went to live outside the Cores. Of course, there were lots of varieties in these Cores - some Protons didn't get along with each other, while others loved each other. The like-minded Core communities quickly found each other and organised into MoleyCool communities, taking the Eel-Actrons with them. After lots of fun, they decided it was time to build cool stuff, like giant balls of gas, and rocky things with fluids on, and giant rocks floating around in the blackness of their own plasma. It quickly became obvious that these new contraptions were prone to collisions, so the MoleyCools decided there should be gravity, meanwhile further organising the thing they called Universe - so united they all felt: they all spoke with a united language, or verse, that of love. After eons of puzzling, the Universe took shape, with solar systems, and later star systems being born. Most of the MoleyCool communities felt very happy with this new situation, but there were some who revolted. They became known as the 'splintered Cells', abbreviated to sCells. These sCells discovered a sphere with like-minded MoleyCools, and called it Whirled, because of the turbulent revolutions going on. This Whirled rotated around the Son of the revolution, who gave light to the Whirled. One sCell got the idea to make another sphere, rotating around the Whirled, to give light during the dark period of the day. Other sCells, green of jealousy, with all their might sped toward the Whirled, trying to destroy it. In doing so, they got crunched together into little clusters of sCells. After a few years, the Son had mercy, and let the sCells come back again, in the form of plants and trees. Then, one of the sCells in the sea wanted more. It took a Core hostage, but the ransom was never paid. Out of boredom, they got married, and effectively became one. This Cored sCell quickly developed the desire to get out of the water - it couldn't swim. The other sCells followed its example, and became creatures with fins and eyes, and mouths that go 'bloob'. Others, the weak of heart, didn't have a spine. But the original Cored sCell did, and with two sticks it found, and later four, it developed contraptions with which to walk, and even grab things. The marriage didn't work out in the end, but their children did multiply, and formed new creatures, as they called them. This system repeated, until lots of species developed out of it. Then, one tree-dwelling creature got struck by lightning, and uttered the first spoken language: 'Shreek!'. Other tree-dwellers saw this, and collected tools to prevent such accidents in the future. They learned how to shriek at different frequencies and loudnesses, and later refined these shrieks, so that a lot of words could be spoken. They also developed a system to cut the shrieks into trees with a piece of molten "I Run" MoleyCools (called thusly because of their tendency to run when confronted with fire, a discovery made by said tree-dweller). Of course, some did not get along with each other, but unlike the Protons, the HewMongs' (language wasn't very developed yet, as said, so this was their name) communities were very dependent on each other. This gave friction, and the HewMongs started beating each other over the head with tree branches. Later they used the "I Run" MoleyCools to build more effective weapons, and also found that some combinations of MoleyCools were good to eat or drink. The HewMongs developed all sorts of communities and occupations, who never really got along with each other, sadly - but colourfully.

File-sharing should not be illegal, and it's not immoral. Not the sharing of 'intellectual property' (oh wow, what a great name for a couple of bits and bytes you're transferring through a cable) is an illegal act, but letting the files be shared. I'm not very clear here, am I? Look at it this way: When someone steals a book, and later you receive it as a present, nicely wrapped up, who is to blame? You? Perhaps you didn't even know. But even if you did, does that make you a criminal? Some say it would, but the one who really did the damage is the thief, not you. So why pay for damage you didn't inflict? Same with file-sharing. Just make sure people can't steal music, simple as that. Why the hell would you want to put your bloody music on a CD anyway? Why not on a spoon, or a cartridge, or a credit card-like device? Just something that can't be read into the computer very easily. But no, they use those nice shiny discs that fit into your CD-ROM drive. Yes, I know, the audio CD was there before the CD-ROM, but does that change anything? Try copying a record or an audio tape to the computer. Sure, some people will still buy equipment to do that, they're enthusiasts, or fanatics, if you like. But you are taking away the possibility to expose music to everyone from all those dumbass users who couldn't tell a keyboard apart from a mouse. "Uh, insert see...um...dee... click Reck... Rackoh... Rack-cord... click Finnish... double-click on muh-puh-three.... huh? Oh, am-pee-three... hey, cool! Now what's that kaazazaaa thing on my thing i use to put these little pictures on(*)?" See? If you want to discourage people from doing something, make it hard. No, make it impossible. If you want to get rid of people smoking, burn all tobacco farms.
